How to file a tax extension for a nonprofit

Tax-exempt organizations file Form 8868 to get an automatic 6-month extension on a 990-series return. It goes on Form 8868 — not Form 7004 — and we file it flat at $9.95. Several cheap filers skip 8868 entirely, so the nonprofit world has fewer good options.

For returns that carry a tax (990-T, 990-PF, 4720), an extension moves the filing deadline, not the payment deadline — pay any balance by the original date. See the penalties guide.

Who files Form 8868?

Tax-exempt organizations use Form 8868 to extend a 990-series filing, including:

  • Return of Organization Exempt from TaxForm 990 / 990-EZ
  • Private foundationForm 990-PF
  • Exempt-org business income taxForm 990-T
  • Excise taxesForm 4720
  • Split-interest trustForm 5227

990-series extensions go on Form 8868 — not Form 7004. Filing for a business entity instead? Use Form 7004.

When is the nonprofit deadline?

A 990-series return is generally due by the 15th day of the 5th month after the organization's year-end. For calendar-year organizations that's typically around May 15 (TODO(verify): exact current-year date) — file Form 8868 by that date. A granted extension is generally six months, moving a calendar-year filer to around November 15 (TODO(verify)).
