Who files Form 7004?
Form 7004 is the IRS Application for Automatic Extension of Time To File Certain Business Income Tax, Information, and Other Returns. Businesses use it to push their filing deadline back about six months. It covers most common business returns:
- C CorporationForm 1120
- S CorporationForm 1120-S
- Partnership / multi-member LLCForm 1065
- Estate or trustForm 1041
- Foreign corporationForm 1120-F
Filing a 990-series nonprofit return instead? Those extensions go on Form 8868, not 7004. Individuals filing a 1040 use Form 4868.
When is Form 7004 due?
File Form 7004 by the original due date of the return you're extending — late requests aren't accepted. For calendar-year filers, partnerships (1065) and S corporations (1120-S) are generally due around March 15, while C corporations (1120) and trusts (1041) are generally due around April 15 (TODO(verify): exact current-year dates). A granted extension is generally six months. Fiscal-year filers use the 15th day of a set month after year-end.

Form 7004 FAQ
Is the Form 7004 extension automatic?
Yes. Form 7004 grants an automatic extension — there is no IRS approval step. As long as it is filed on time and the information is correct, the extension is granted.
Does an extension give me more time to pay?
No. Form 7004 only extends the time to file. Any tax owed is still due by the original deadline, so pay an estimate with your extension to avoid interest and the failure-to-pay penalty.
How long is the extension?
Form 7004 generally grants an automatic 6-month extension. TODO(verify): some entities and short tax years differ — confirm for your situation.
What does it cost to file Form 7004?
A flat $9.95 per filing. No subscription, no per-tier upsells, and a money-back guarantee if the IRS rejects a return we can't fix.
Can I file a 990-series extension on Form 7004?
No. Tax-exempt 990-series returns use Form 8868, not 7004. We support that too.
