How to file a tax extension for an S corporation

S corporations file Form 7004 to get an automatic 6-month extension on their Form 1120-S return. It's an information return — the company itself usually owes no entity-level income tax — and we file the extension flat at $9.95.

Extending the 1120-S does not extend the shareholders' personal returns. Each shareholder still needs their own Form 4868 if they need more time on their 1040. See the penalties guide.

Who files Form 7004 for an S-corp?

Any S corporation — including an LLC that elected S-corp taxation — that needs more time to file its Form 1120-S files Form 7004 in the company's name using its EIN. The extension is automatic; there's no approval step when it's filed on time with correct information.

When is the S-corp deadline?

For calendar-year S corporations, Form 1120-S is generally due around March 15 (TODO(verify): exact current-year date) — file Form 7004 by that date. A granted extension is generally six months, moving a calendar-year filer to around September 15 (TODO(verify)). Fiscal-year filers use the 15th day of the 3rd month after year-end.

S-corp extension FAQ

What form does an S-corp use for an extension?

Form 7004, to extend the Form 1120-S. An LLC that elected S-corp taxation uses the same Form 7004.

Does extending the 1120-S extend the shareholders' returns?

No. Each shareholder must file their own Form 4868 to extend their personal 1040 if they need more time.

Does an S-corp owe tax with the extension?

Usually not — an S-corp generally passes income through to shareholders. If your S-corp owes a built-in gains or similar entity-level tax, pay it by the original deadline; the extension does not extend the time to pay.

How long is the S-corp extension?

Generally an automatic 6-month extension, moving a calendar-year filer from around March to around September. TODO(verify): confirm the exact current-year dates.
