How to file a tax extension for a partnership
Partnerships and multi-member LLCs file Form 7004 to get an automatic 6-month extension on their Form 1065 return. The partnership generally owes no income tax itself — income passes through to the partners — and we file the extension flat at $9.95.
Who files Form 7004 for a partnership?
Any entity filing Form 1065 — a general or limited partnership, an LLP, or a multi-member LLC taxed as a partnership — files Form 7004 in the partnership's name using its EIN. The extension is automatic; there's no approval step when filed on time with correct information.
When is the partnership deadline?
For calendar-year partnerships, Form 1065 is generally due around March 15 (TODO(verify): exact current-year date) — file Form 7004 by that date. A granted extension is generally six months, moving a calendar-year filer to around September 15 (TODO(verify)). Fiscal-year filers use the 15th day of the 3rd month after year-end.

Partnership extension FAQ
What form does a partnership use for an extension?
Form 7004, to extend Form 1065. Multi-member LLCs taxed as partnerships use the same Form 7004.
Does extending the 1065 extend the partners' returns?
No. Each partner files their own Form 4868 to extend their personal 1040 if they need more time.
Does a partnership owe tax with the extension?
Generally not — a partnership passes income through to its partners. The extension extends only the time to file the 1065, not any time to pay tax owed at the partner level.
How long is the partnership extension?
Generally an automatic 6-month extension, moving a calendar-year filer from around March to around September. TODO(verify): confirm the exact current-year dates.
