How filing an extension works

Four simple steps from start to an IRS-acknowledged extension. No tax expertise required — we ask plain-English questions and handle the IRS paperwork.

  1. 1

    Enter your information

Pick your form (personal, business, or nonprofit) and answer a short set of plain-English questions — names, address, and identifying numbers. We format and validate everything as you type.

  2. 2

    Add your tax estimate

Tell us your estimated tax, payments, and any balance due. An exact figure is not required for an automatic extension — a reasonable estimate is fine, and paying any balance now avoids penalties.

  3. 3

    Review and pay

Check a clean summary of your entries, then pay one flat fee through our secure Stripe checkout. No subscription and no surprise charges — the total is shown before you confirm.

  4. 4

    We e-file with the IRS

We transmit your extension directly to the IRS and email you a confirmation. The IRS acknowledgment typically arrives within 24–48 hours, and your status is visible in your dashboard.

Remember: an extension gives you more time to file, not more time to pay. If you expect to owe, estimate and pay that amount when you file the extension to avoid interest and penalties. Learn how penalties work →
