How to file a tax extension for an LLC

The form your LLC uses for an extension depends on how it's taxed. Multi-member LLCs and LLCs taxed as a corporation use Form 7004; a single-member LLC reported on the owner's 1040 uses Form 4868. Either way, the extension is automatic and we file it flat — from $4.95.

An extension moves your filing deadline, not your payment deadline. Pay any estimated tax by the original date. See the penalties guide.

Which form does my LLC use?

An LLC is a state entity, not a federal tax classification — the IRS taxes it based on an election. Match your situation:

  • Multi-member LLC (taxed as partnership)Form 7004 → 1065
  • LLC electing S-corp taxationForm 7004 → 1120-S
  • LLC electing C-corp taxationForm 7004 → 1120
  • Single-member LLC (disregarded, on 1040)Form 4868

Not sure how your LLC is taxed? Check the election you filed (or default rules) — TODO(verify) your classification with a tax professional if unclear.

When is the deadline?

File the extension by the original due date of the return you're extending — late requests aren't accepted. For calendar-year filers, multi-member LLCs taxed as a partnership (1065) are generally due around March 15, an LLC taxed as a C corporation (1120) around April 15, and a single-member LLC's 1040 around April 15 (TODO(verify): exact current-year dates). A granted extension is generally six months.

LLC extension FAQ

Does an LLC file its own extension?

A multi-member LLC (taxed as a partnership) or an LLC taxed as a corporation files Form 7004 in the entity's name. A single-member LLC reported on the owner's 1040 is extended by the owner's Form 4868.

Is the LLC extension automatic?

Yes. Both Form 7004 and Form 4868 grant automatic extensions — there is no IRS approval step when filed on time with correct information.

Does the extension give my LLC more time to pay?

No. It extends only the time to file. Any tax owed is still due by the original deadline, so pay an estimate to avoid interest and the failure-to-pay penalty.

How long is the LLC extension?

Generally an automatic 6-month extension. TODO(verify): confirm the exact current-year dates for your tax classification.
